Why are Christians so worried about Atheists?

Or in other words, "Why do Christians have such a hard on for Atheists." As an ex-Christian I remember quite a few former enemies. We did not like the JW's very much. We didn't think much of the Mormons either. (Sorry, Mitt.) We thought New Agers were freaks. We thought that all these groups were guilty of what Paul outlines in Galatians about the "other gospel." He condemns the teachers of other gospels in very strong terms.

"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." Gal. 1:8

In the light of this message from Paul, you would think that Christians would spend most of their efforts on the ones guilty of this crime.

Atheists on the other hand, do not preach another gospel. We don't preach any "gospel" at all. No one is going to be fooled by us. Our position is very clear and straightforward. Those who believe the bible has supernatural origins and are in search of an explanation of its contents are far more susceptible to deception by Mormons, JW's, etc., than to little old us. We aren't going door to door. So why do Christians feel so threatened by atheism?

Well, I don't have all the answers, but I think there are two main reasons:

1. They misunderstand us. I heard an Atheist hater on CNN describe Atheists as believers in nothing, and she did not mean it as a compliment. Yeah, that's the ticket. We Atheist's believe in absolutely nothing. Case closed.

2. They are fighting secularism and atheism is seen as going hand in hand. I am not going to go into detail but you know what I am talking about. Ever since Darwin everything has been going to hell in a hand basket and the Church has been threatened with hundreds of -isms. Atheism is seen as the root cause. This seems to be another thing they misunderstand.

Christians should really actually be very appreciative of Atheists for our honesty. We are not like the liberal Christians who want to eat their cake and have it too. They still want to go to church and sing in the choir but they have watered the bible down more to their tastes and thrown out unappetizing doctrines like hell and original sin. Yet, they somehow manage to convince themselves that they are believers in Paul. I'm honest, I don't twist Paul's words. I believe that Paul meant what he said in the epistle to the Romans. I just think he's full of shit.

This will be one of the main themes of this blog, exploring what I perceive to be a fascination and obsession by some Christians over Atheists.
